‘Exploring the Possibilities of Tacos and Beyond’
Taco Mondo, which has hit the streets of Philly starting April 2013, is created by Michael Sultan and Carolyn Nguyen. Their background ranges from pastry, to farms, to catering, to fine dining.
Carolyn who is Vietnamese via Louisiana and Michael who is a good old Jew boy from N.E. Philly, brings a different flair to the Phily Food Truck scene. Carolyn’s passions lie in the details of curing near the rolling pasta and making a perfect ravioli with the perfectly reduced and balanced sauce. Michael’s passions lie in ethnic foods foods with ingredients that are unfamiliar to his background. They have been cooking since their teens and combined, they have 25 years of cooking experience. They are also owners of Street Food Philly.
Taco Mondo Experience & Atmosphere
You will usually find Michael in the Taco Mondo Truck, whipping up some delicious tacos of all kinds. The menu does change often, keeping you on your toes, while building up your anticipation daily.
Some of the foods that have been found at Taco Mondo are: BBQ Brisket Tacos, Pork Carnitas Tacos, Dry Rubbed Pollo Burrito, Roasted Chicken Tacos, BBQ Chicken Empanadas, Dry Aged Beef & Fontina Empanadas, Thai coconut fried chicken Empanadas, grilled corn on the cob, Salads and much more.
During the school year, they can sometimes be found in the University City area at 33rd and Arch Streets. Other times, at the Navy Yard or The Porch at 30th Street Station. During the summer months, they travel all over, sometimes hitting the locations mentioned above, and other times they can be found at Philly Food Festivals and or catering events.
I had the pleasure of trying their Taco Brisket, which had blueberry BBQ sauce, fried Shallots and pickled jingle bell peppers. I then tried one of their homemade BBQ chicken and Fontina Empanada. I truly enjoyed the flavors of the taco and found the Empanada very tasty.
Taco Mondo as mentioned is always on the move. Your best bet is to follow them on Twitter for daily updates on where they will be and what some of their food specials for that day.
