The Cow and The Curd – Tasty Cheese Curds in Philly

The Cow and the Curd

‘Midwest Flavor Mooves To Philly’

It is NOT a Mozzarella Stick! Welcome Wisconsin battered fried cheese curds!

The Cow and the Curd was started in January of 2013 by owners Rob Mitchell and Laura Windham-Mitchell and has swept Philly by storm. They also have Stella Jeanne’s Carnival Concessions and have told us that a second The Cow and The Curd food truck is in production.

The Cow and The Curd Experience & Atmosphere

The Cow and The Curd’s cheddar curds are made fresh and shipped weekly from a small dairy farm in Wisconsin. They hand-batter them with their double-hopped IPA recipe and serve them to you hot and delicious with one of their four gourmet dipping sauces.

The Cow and the CurdWhat you’ll usually find is their “Classic” curds, which is the cornerstone of the menu. These curds are of white & yellow Wisconsin cheddar cheese that is beer battered and fried to perfection. They also have a list of specialty curds as well, with Farmer’s Garden (sun dried tomato, jalapeño, basil & garlic in white cheddar) and Billy Curds (goat cheese curds) topping that list.

I myself even tried the Cow’s cheese curds at a 100 year celebration event for Cohen Hardware & Co. I enjoyed them so much, when I saw the food truck at the tree lighting ceremony at South Street Headhouse District, I had to have them again. The Cow also serves Milwaukee brewed Sprecher root beer and cream soda.

Why cheese curds in Philadelphia? Owner Rob Mitchell told us why.

Bringing Wisconsin battered fried cheese curds to the east coast culinary scene was the original plan. We tested the market via our concessions business (Stella Jeanne’s) for several years and each season the cheese curds sales doubled. From there we understood this product deserved its own brand. We improved quality (fresh, not frozen), authenticity ( chef created recipes) and originality (flavored curds; gourmet dipping sauces) and The Cow and The Curd brand was born.

Regarding the name, we created a brand which we hoped would strike an emotional chord with our audience. The Cow and The Curd is true Americana. It represents turn of the 20th century Midwestern farm life: simplicity, purity and goodness. Our battered fried cheese curds are a Wisconsin comfort food staple. Combine their tastiness with the visual of a Midwestern farm, a dairy cow and a Daisy Bell bicycle, there’s no better way to make someone smile.

The Cow and The Curd is a special events truck that targets the craft beer and wine crowd. You might find them at a specialty lunch location every so often, but the night crowd, bar scene, event circuit is what they seek. And of course, there’s always private catering such as wedding receptions and other types of events.

Some of the special events that you will find The Cow at are the Night Market, all major craft beer events, Blocktoberfest, Delaware Flower Market, PIFA Street Fair, Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival and more.

Just as the cheesesteak is a culinary staple in Philadelphia, the same could be said for cheese curds in the Midwest. We don’t think you’ll be disappointed in what The Cow and The Curd has to offer. Taste them and tell us your opinion.
