‘Awesome German Celebrations Throughout the City of Brotherly Love’

Oktoberfest 2013 invades Philadelphia for a whole month. It’s a 16-day festival, running from late September to the first weekend in October. An exuberant explosion of beer-drinking, eating all of the German types of wurst one can eat, German music, folk dancing, and cultural experiences that one could dream of.

There will be daily and weekly celebrations throughout the city such as block parties, festivals, sausage eating contests, German beer tasting, and much more.

  • Cannstatter Volksfest/Oktoberfest ~ August 31 – September 2 ~ This 3-day event at Cannstatter Park on Academy Road will have German beer, German food, live music and entertainment, games & much more. ~ Cannstatter Volkfest/Oktoberfest ~
  • Bierstube Lobstoberfest ~ September 13 – 15 ~ 204 Market Street – The Old City German Pub will have platters of fresh Maine Lobsters in which you will be able to wash it all down with several Oktoberfest beers. The outside sidewalk will be decorated in German festive Oktoberfest novelties. From September 21-22, they’ll pair barbecue with pilsner served in a boot-shaped glass. ~ Bierstube Lobstoberfest ~
  • Frankford Hall ~ September 14 – 27 ~ 1012 Frankford Ave Fishtown – This beer garden will host daily events surrounding Oktoberfest for 2 weeks. It will kick off Oktoberfest September 21 with a block party. From Girard Avenue to Shackamaxon street, Frankford Hall turns Frankford Avenue into a German festival. There will be beer tents, food trucks,live music, and activities such as pony rides for the kids.
  • The German Society of Pennsylvania ~ September 21 ~ 611 Spring Garden Street – Starting at 2 pm, this yearly event includes food such as wursts, potato salad, sauerkraut, a traditional Spanferkel (roasted pig), dessert, and non-alcoholic beverages – all of which covered by the admission charge. There will be a cash bar for alcoholic beverages. Entertainment will be provided by a “one man band” presenting traditional German music and GTV Almrausch Schuhplattler Group .   • MKG Brew Blast ~ September 21 ~ From 1 pm to 5 pm, the 3rd Annual brew blast will take place aboard the Battleship New Jersey. Enjoy live classic rock, a wide selection of beers, to include craft beers, with the classic rock station and a free tour of the Battleship. Tickets are $45. ~ 3rd Annual MKG Brew Blast ~

  • Morgan’s Pier ~ September 21 ~ 221 N. Columbus Blvd – Their first-ever Oktoberfest event sponsored by Yards Brewery. It will include DJs starting at 2 p.m., with grilled food such as sausages and hot dogs. There will also be pretels with two dips and potato salad, and a large variety of fall and seasonal beers. $10 gets you three tickets for beer and food.
  • Oktoberfest Street Festival ~  September 21 ~ From 12 pm to close. Located on Frankford Ave, between Girard & Shakamaxon. Fun for the whole family with face painters, balloon artists, pony rides, German beer tents with live music, great German food, and great German beer. Frankford Hall will be a part of this event.
  • Brauhaus Schmitz ~ September 16 to 26 ~ 718 South Street – The German Beer Hall will be celebrating their 5th annual Oktoberfest with week-long special events, great German food and beers and more. Their outdoor street festival will take place on September 21, from noon until 8 pm. A whole block of South Street will shut down for live music, a pig roast and lots of great German brews. ~ Oktoberfest at Brauhaus Schmitz ~
  • Wursthaus Schmitz ~ September 22 & October 4Wursthaus Schmitz, located at the Reading Terminal Market, will hosts two days of Oktoberfest celebrations complete with live music, German fare, festive decorations, beer and more. The events will take place from 1 to 6 pm on both days. Wursthaus Schmitz will also pair-up with Reading Terminal’s pub, Molly Malloy’s, for German beer all day.
  • 43rd Annual German – American Steuben Parade ~ September 28 ~ Starting at noon, come watch the Greater-Philadelphia German-American Community German-American Clubs, Military Units, German & American Bands, The World’s Largest Tricycle & much more. Following the parade, stay for an Oktoberfest celebration at the Bavarian Volksfest Verein on the grounds of the United German-Hungarian Club. ~ 43rd Annual German – American Steuben Parade ~
  • Hop Angel Brauhaus ~ September 28 & 29 ~ From 3 pm to 11 pm, there will be delicious German food; from bratwurst, sauerkraut, to slow-braised pork knuckle, Bavarian Pretzels, and more. There will also be four Oktoberfest beers available (all local), live music starting at 9 pm, keg bowling and much more. Bonus: A free sausage sandwich to anyone wearing lederhosen or a dirndl. Located in the Fox Chase neighborhood in Northeast Philly.
  • Xtober-Fest ~ September 28 ~ 1100 Pattison Avenue – From 2-8 pm, the 2nd Annual Xtober-Fest at XFinity Live will be an all-day event that will feature 125+ beers to sample in a custom stein for you, beer gardens, authentic Bavarian dishes paired and made with brews, German food, live music, games and more.   • King of Prussia Beerfest RoyaleOctober 3 & 5 ~ Come check out the Beerfest Royale at the King of Prussia mall parking lot. This two-day event will consist of more than 50 breweries and more than 100 brews. There will also be food from the local restaurants, exciting dishes that will be paired perfectly with your favorite craft brewers, live music and much more.  Taking place outdoors at The Plaza at the King of Prussia Mall, parking lot adjacent to Mall Boulevard, King of Prussia. ~ Directions ~
  • Oktoberfest at Grumblethorpe ~ October 5 ~ 5267 Germantown Road – From 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm, head over to Historic Germantown, a 1744 colonial German country area, for a traditional Oktoberfest. There will be music, German food, beer, house tours, cider-pressing and more. ~ Oktoberfest at Grumblethorpe ~
  • Memphis Taproom ThirstOberfest ~ October 5 ~ 2331 East Cumberland Street – From noon until 6 pm, the 4th annual ThirstOberfest returns to Memphis Taproom. There will be over 20 types of draft beers and limited release beers at the beer garden. Hungry? Also the out the special-edition food truck that will be selling German-inspired hotdogs.
  • Roxtoberfest ~ October 5 ~Come join the Roxborough community from noon until 6 pm on Lyceum Avenue in Roxborough and enjoy a beer garden, food trucks, vendors, a dunk tank, carnival games and more at Roxtoberfest. Rain date will take place on Sunday, October 6.
  • Midtown Village Fall Festival ~ October 6 ~ From noon til 8 pm, this festival, in its 8th year, will be eight full blocks long. This party will feature a beer garden, sumo wrestling outside of Raw street, mechanical bull at Finn Mc Cool’s, vendors, arts and crafts with face painting and lots of beer and food from the many establishments in the area. ~ Midtown Village Fall Festival ~
  • Distinguished Oktoberfest at The Cambridge ~ October 6 ~ From 3 pm to 6 pm in the Cambridge Courtyard, come enjoy a relaxed celebration at The Cambridge on South Street. $30 will get you German fare, a traditional German beer stein to take home and two German brews. Make sure you go to the events tab on their web site for ticket information.
  • Bloktoberfest ~ October 19 ~ From noon until 8 pm, this free event to attend is a four-block festival on South Street, from Broad to 18th Streets. In its 5th year, there will be German beer, food, live music, with food trucks and much more. ~ Bloktoberfest ~
  • OktoberLaufFest ~  October 27 ~ Starting at 10 am, come run this half marathon in your Lederhosen and support lung cancer research in memory of Walter Grund. ~ OktoberLaufFest 1/2 Marathon ~

So, get ready for Oktoberfest in Philly! Women, get out your German dirndls (the traditional, richly embroidered dresses) and men, get out your leather lederhosen, hats, suspenders and jackets. And get ready for some fun, tradition, and great German food and beer. Prost!
