FREE Screening: Las Madres de Berks with Michelle Angela Ortiz at South Philly Barbacoa ~ June 3 ~ FREE ~ From 7 pm to 9 pm. Held at South Philly Barbacoa at 1140 S. 9th Street. Part of a larger public art project by the filmmaker, visual artist Michelle Angela Ortiz, the film highlights the stories of four mothers who were detained for two years with their children at a family prison in Berks County, Pennsylvania. An opening reception for a new portrait exhibition by Ortiz takes place ahead of the screening (at 5 p.m.) and features music and South Philly Barbacoa fare. Immigrating South Mural Tour ~ June 8 ~ 10 am to Noon. Tour begins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at 128 N. Broad Street. This new mural tour by Mural Arts Philadelphia highlights the city’s rich diversity as well as South Philadelphia’s vibrant immigrant communities of the past and present. Pride Month In Philadelphia ~ Month of June ~ The city of Philadelphia will observe LGBTQ Pride Month with big parades, festivals, concerts and more. Philadelphia celebrates the LGBTQ community this week with the Philly Pride kick-off party on Friday, the annual Philadelphia Dyke March on Saturday that begins and ends at Louis I. Kahn Park in the Gayborhood and the PrideDay LGBT Parade & Festival on Sunday starting at 11:00 am at 13th & Locust streets. ~ Pride Month in Philadelphia ~

Odunde Festival ~ June 9 ~ 10 am to 7 pm ~  23rd & Lombard streets to Grays Ferry Avenue; 20th to 23rd streets on South Street. Now in its 44th year, the event culminates with a spiritual procession to the Schuylkill River to ring in the Yoruba New Year, followed by music, dance and vendors along South Street. ~ Odunde Festival ~

PrideDay LGBT Parade & Festival ~ June 9 ~ Starting at 11:00 am at 13th & Locust streets. The festival gates at The Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing open at noon. Enjoy a spirited one-and-a-half-mile procession that snakes from the Gayborhood to the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Expect a lineup of marching bands, troupes representing local LGBTQ organizations and vibrant floats overflowing with dancers, drag queens and local dignitaries.
